European outdoor furniture in Costa Rica: design for the tropics
European design sets the benchmark for outdoor furniture, but not every piece feels at home in Costa Rica. The difference is in the materials, the selection and starting from the space.
Europe has been at the forefront of outdoor furniture for decades, with brands known for their craftsmanship and an aesthetic that does not date. But when creating spaces in Costa Rica, not every high-end piece feels like it belongs. Good design has to do more than impress: it has to withstand our climate and suit the way we live outdoors.
Four traditions, one standard
The brands we represent come from four countries, and each tradition brings something different:
- Belgium: the heart of the portfolio. Royal Botania and Manutti in outdoor luxury; Gescova and BETACO in more accessible design; Jardinico and Umbrosa in shade; MAZU in architectural planters with integrated light. They share a close relationship with fabric, wood and detail.
- Switzerland: Glatz, which has made parasols in Frauenfeld since 1895, brings the engineering: frames built to stand up to real wind.
- The Netherlands: 4 Seasons Outdoor, a three-generation family company, brings a practical standard: comfortable, well-made pieces that can stay outside.
- Spain: Resol, from Girona, and Bōln, from Zaragoza, bring the perspective of intensive use: injection-molded polypropylene for the everyday chair, and modular Flexyskin seating for hotels and public spaces.
Materials for sun, rain, humidity and salt air
Costa Rica's climate tests every material: strong sun for much of the year, heavy rain, high humidity and, near the coast, salt air. Some materials respond especially well:
- Teak: its natural oils protect it from moisture and fungi, and it ages into a silver-gray patina.
- Powder-coated or anodized aluminum: light and rust-free, a good base for frames near the sea.
- Stainless steel: structural and durable, as long as the grade suits the environment.
- Corten steel: it oxidizes in a controlled way until it takes on its own color; MAZU offers it alongside recycled aluminum with a marine-grade powder coat.
- Polypropylene and technical foams: they do not absorb water, clean easily and handle daily use.
- Solution-dyed outdoor fabrics: they keep their color in the sun and resist mildew.
How to choose by space
Residential terrace
This is where comfort and warmth matter most. A modular sofa from Manutti or Gescova, a teak-topped table from 4 Seasons Outdoor or BETACO, a Jardinico parasol and a couple of MAZU planters are often enough for a terrace that gets used all day and into the night.
Pool
Direct sun, water and chlorine. Look for loungers in teak, aluminum or polypropylene, cushions in outdoor fabric and shade that handles wind. Here Glatz parasols or Umbrosa's forms provide shade with character.
Hotel
Each area asks for something different: luxury pieces such as Royal Botania in suites and private terraces, high-performance shade at the pool and furniture that handles constant turnover in common areas. We explain how we work on our hospitality page.
Restaurant
Chairs that stack, clean quickly and get used every day. Resol's are specified for exactly that, and they pair well with Glatz or Jardinico parasols when the terrace needs reliable shade.
Public space
Plazas, open lobbies and shared gardens call for seating that does not depend on cushions. Bōln's modules reconfigure and link together, and a MAZU planter with light helps give the space structure at night.
For those who design with more than style
For architects and designers, the right furniture does more than fill a space: it tells a story. In Costa Rica, that story is about nature, warmth and understated sophistication. If you are working on a project, our architects page explains how we work with studios.
In short
Choosing European design makes sense. Choosing the right materials and brands for each space is what makes it work in the tropics. Browse the outdoor furniture section or write to us to talk about your space.
